JONATHAN LARKIN is a Liverpool-based queer writer whose authentic working-class voice spans TV, theatre, and radio. A graduate of the Everyman and Playhouse Young Writers’ Programme, Jonathan recently wrote the critically acclaimed play Cherry Jezebel, which was nominated for Best New Play at the UK Theatre Awards.
On screen, he spent 17 years as a core member of the Hollyoaks (Channel 4) writing team, where he famously created two of the show’s first trans characters. His digital series Proper Messy (Conker Media/BBC Switch) was shortlisted for a Broadcast Digital Award, and he has developed work for numerous major television companies. Jonathan is currently developing an original crime drama series with Long Story TV.
Our Associate Artist relationship with Jonathan began in 2025 with after we read the first draft of his script for All The Devils. He now joins our Associate Artists Programme 2025/26, for a two-year residency of professional development and the creation of new work ‘All The Devils’
Alongside Frank Peschier (Literary Manager at Headlong), we have been supporting Jonathan to develop his first draft into a fully realised, production-ready script. Beyond the page, we are working to champion his voice and find exciting new contexts for his work on a national scale.
Jonathan’s development reflects our core commitment to supporting playwrights outside of London. By partnering with the Liverpool Playhouse and Homotopia, we are able to provide the dedicated space, time, and resources that regional writers need to bring new plays to the stage, ensuring groundbreaking theatre is created and produced locally.
We established partnerships with creative health organisations Axess and Sahir House and academics from University of Manchester.
The Switchflicker Associate Artists Programme (SAAP25/26) is a two-year incubator supporting new work creation and professional development. Our team offers specialised mentorship across contemporary performance, theatre, music, dance, interdisciplinary practice, queer heritage, and socially engaged art.
