The Unheard

SoundProof, the debut ep from Manchester based DJ and producer,The UnHeard is a subterranean jumble of esoteric sounds for the mind, body and soul.

From the ethereal openerThe Complete Sweet through the night time cityscape sounds of Melomiander and the downright kookiness of Jazz Belly Ride, SoundProof conjures up all kinds of musical imagery; from golden beaches to English countryside, through deserts and urbane, urban landscapes, ending up, quite literally, somewhere in Disneyland. Or, in the words of Un Heard, it’s " …Wacky, quality, liberal instrumental sounding home recordings, with a bonus nugget of El-Skit." And somewhere along the line spot the cheeky appearance of a famous antipodean television cartoonist/animal lover with a dodgy beard – no stone has been left unturned.

The A is a trilogy of beats and pieces; opening with Yorkie Bar breaks upfront, emotionally wrought strings in the back, and a couple of RJD2 tunes on the stereo. Cheekily buffered by a DJ Nobody-style Hawaiian refrain and scratch weapon kit ('Jazz Belly Ride'/'el-skit' respectively), turn it over and you get a fair depiction of how a 70's cop-mystery show would have sounded were Dan Snaith in charge of the soundtrack; wah-wahs/flutes and a cavalcade of axe-wielding synths ('Complete Sweet'). Done.

Reviews

The mysterious Unheard debut on Switchflicker with a wonderful bboy satiating cut and paste EP. "Melomiander" is the standout track, where fat hop drums underpin a forgetful sax and urgent strings combo. The silly "Jazz Belly Ride" takes its strength from funny brass and nifty drums, whilst "El-Skit" is a tirade of spoken and FX based samples. "Complete Sweet" completes the picture, as happy keys, compressed flute and cosmic synths run alongside dependable drums.
